How home EV charging actually works

A home EV charger (sometimes called a wallbox) connects to your home's electrical supply and charges your car at 7 kW - roughly 7 times faster than a standard 3-pin plug. You plug in when you get home, the charger does the rest overnight (or whenever electricity is cheapest), and you wake up to a full battery. If you have solar panels, a smart charger can use your surplus solar to charge the car during the day - effectively for free.

Assumptions: Cost-per-mile figures are based on 3.5 miles/kWh efficiency at 7.5p/kWh off-peak electricity vs 50p/kWh public rapid charging and 145p/litre petrol at 40 mpg. Actual costs depend on tariff, charger type, vehicle efficiency, and driving pattern.

  • Home charging can cost around 3-5p per mile.

That's around a third to a quarter of public charging (around 12-18p per mile) and roughly a fifth of petrol. Over 10,000 miles a year, that's around £800-£1,500 saved vs public charging.

  • You don't need a driveway to install a charger.

Most chargers are installed on exterior walls, in garages, or in car ports. If your parking is close to your property, there's usually a solution - we assess this during survey.

  • Smart chargers schedule automatically.

Set it once and your charger waits for the cheapest electricity window, typically overnight on a smart tariff, then charges while you sleep.

  • Solar diversion is a practical option.

Chargers like myenergi Zappi can detect surplus solar generation and divert it to your car automatically. In summer, you can charge largely from your own panels.

  • A 7 kW charger adds around 30 miles of range per hour.

Most EVs charge fully overnight. Even a partial top-up of 3-4 hours covers a typical daily commute of around 30-40 miles.

What a home EV charger means for you

Home charging is the single biggest benefit of owning an EV. No more detours to public chargers, no more app juggling, and no more paying 3-5 times more than you need to.

Save £800-£1,500 per year on fuel

We got a Zappi charger installed so we could use our solar panels to charge the car. The team explained how solar diversion works and set everything up so it happens automatically. Couldn't be easier.

Had the EV charger fitted at the same time as our solar panels. One survey, one install team, one Evidence Pack. Much simpler than dealing with two separate companies. Tidy job and everything works together.

We needed a charger but our consumer unit was full. They upgraded the board, installed the charger, and sorted everything in a day. Clean work, no fuss, and they tested everything before they left.
